Tenrikyo Ofudesaki  - Miki Nakayama's Intention Prior to Awakening -

As the story of the events is told, by the evening of October 23rd. 1838 the health situation in the Nakayama family was such that three members of the family were stricken with various complaints of illness. Miki's understanding of the causes of the evil of illness was in line with the other members of their community and she was eager to employ the services of the best healer in the area and agreed to act as medium in the performance of a ceremony that invoked ritual magical incantations to exorcise the gods and spirits that were visiting evil upon her family.

In that regard Miki, like the rest of her family and her neighbors, sincerely believed that evils such as illness were caused by gods and evil spirits that for whatever reason had chosen to invade her home and torment her family. The efforts of Ichibei Nakano, their favorite and relatively expensive healing monk, had worked for them in the past and Miki urgently wanted him to perform his special healing prayers through the use of  magical ritual incantations that would exorcise from the Nakayama residence the gods and spirits that were the cause of their suffering and as far as Miki was concerned the sooner that happened the better.

Until now, there has been talk about various magical rites.
From now on, they shall have no effect.
In the past such magical rites have been taught to the branches,
but watch the future.
